Ikea recalls crib mattresses due to hazard risk to infants

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Ikea is recalling five models of its VYSSA crib mattresses because a gap between the mattresses and a crib could pose an entrapment risk to infants.

The mattresses are designed to be used with an Ikea crib. The furniture maker noticed a gap between the mattress and crib ends that could pose a hazard for infants.

Ikea has already received two reports of infants becoming trapped between the mattress and an end of the crib, but the children did not suffer any injuries.

The recall applies to any VYSSA mattress with the date of manufacture on May 4, 2014 or earlier. Identification can be found on a permanent label attached to the mattress cover, which shows the date of manufacture by month, day, year and model name.

Those with a VYSSA mattress should measure a possible gap by removing all bedding and then placing two fingers between the end of the crib and mattress. The gap should not be larger than the width of two fingers.

If the gap is larger, Ikea urges customers to immediately stop using the mattress and return it to the nearest Ikea store for an exchange or full refund. Proof of purchase is not required for an exchange or refund.

According to Ikea, the crib mattresses have been sold in the U.S. since August 2010.
