Eye on L.A. explores SoCal's must-see art exhibits
Beauty and art are all around us here in Southern California, so it is time for us to explore!

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Beauty and art are all around us here in Southern California, so it is time for us to explore!

We started with the big art initiative "Pacific Standard Time" at venues all over Southern California, dip into the story and controversy behind some amazing murals, and the art of the lowrider, and even try out some impressive nail art.

Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA and the NuMu Egg Museum

Southern California's art community has come together with the Getty for PST Los Angeles, this year focusing on Latino and Latin American Art. More than 70 art institutions are taking part in this experience, including NuMu, an egg-shaped traveling museum from Guatemala that features contemporary art. NuMu is at LACMA until February 2018. http://www.lacma.org/

Chicano Murales

One of the more impactful Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibits is Murales Rebeldes at LA Plaza in Downtown LA. This retrospective shows murals once part of the Chicano movement that were censored, whitewashed or even destroyed. Through the stories behind eight murals, this exhibition documents controversy and loss while celebrating artistic and historical contributions. http://www.pacificstandardtime.org/en/exhibitions/exhibit/view/Murales-Rebeldes

Lowriders

The Petersen Automotive Museum is revving up its exhibits with some of the world's most famous and beautiful lowriders. The exhibit, which can be seen through July, 2018, features cars like the famed Gypsy Rose, which was featured prominently in the opening credits of the 1970s sitcom Chico and the Man. https://petersen.org/

Tiki Art

One of the largest collections of tiki artifacts can now be experienced at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Feliz through July 2018. This exhibit features tiki artists such as Shag and Bumatay in addition to new artists like Atomikitty Susannah Mosher. Tio's Tacos

It's no wonder that the adage "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is a favorite of Martin Sanchez. Sanchez owns Tio's Tacos in Riverside and has created an oasis in the restaurant's back courtyard with pieces of art made from recycled objects. Check out the pyramid and chapel, both made from recycled bottles. And be sure to look down, as the walkway has treasures from the Sanchez family cemented inside, things like toothbrushes, radios and even bicycles! By the way, the food is fabulous! Try their carne asada tacos, the shrimp cocktail, micheladas and any one of their 22 agua fresca flavors, made fresh daily. https://www.instagram.com/tiostacos/

Cardboard Artist

Calder Greenwood creates street installations out of cardboard and papier-mché, and is featured in the documentary "The Cardboard Artist." From time to time, Calder will open his studio to the public for events like Downtown L.A.'s Art Walk, but you are most likely to come across one of Greenwood's cardboard masterpieces when and where you least expect it.
