Feed SoCal: OC food banks supply dwindles during summer
For the entire month of June, ABC7 is working with local food banks as part of the Feed SoCal food drive. One of those locations is in Orange County.

IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- Every day, Javier Arriaga works for one reason: to make sure he can feed his two daughters.

But lately it has been getting harder for him to make ends meet.

"Everything is getting very expensive and the work is getting slow," he said.

He is one of thousands of people who find a helping hand every week at the Vineyard Church of Anaheim.

Vineyard Church gets much of its food from Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. The nonprofit distributes food to 320 community partners in the hopes of ending hunger in the county.

Second Harvest CEO Nicole Sudyam is leading a "nourishing hope" tour. It will show prospective volunteers about the work the nonprofit does. It will feature pictures of real clients lining the tour route, as a way to help people understand how real the need to help the hungry is.

Second Harvest is also one of the regional food banks partnering with ABC7 for the Feed SoCal Hunger Initiative.

"I think efforts like the Feed SoCal food drive really make a difference, especially in the summer months when donations tend to be low," Sudyam said.

Arriaga said he is grateful for the generosity of the community and hopes others hear his simple message.

"Love the people, help the people," he said.
