Saggy-pants ban in Azusa? Just a hoax, police say

AZUSA, Calif. (KABC) -- The warnings began popping up on social media. There's a new fashion code in Azusa, enforced by the threat of a $100 fine or 10 days in jail.

"Pull up your pants," the semi-official-looking sign admonished. "No one wants to see your underwear."

The posts announced a new municipal code in the San Gabriel Valley city banning saggy pants that display underwear and threatening a fine or jail time for violators.

Of course one clue to its authenticity: the sign said the new ordinance would take effect April 1.

Azusa city officials began getting so many calls asking if was true that police took to Twitter to debunk the April Fool's hoax.

"It's a fake, it's not true," said Azusa Officer Mike Bires. "We don't have a no-saggy-pants ordinance."

Still some residents wouldn't mind a ban on the fashion trend.

"It's very distasteful," said one woman.

"I don't sag," said Azusa resident Joseph Ayala. "I wear my pants where my waistline should be. I don't like showing my butt off."
