WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Jubilant crowds celebrated the Supreme Court's same-sex marriage ruling in West Hollywood Friday.

"It's about time. We've been waiting for this a long time, equality for all," Hawthorne resident Evelyn Diaz said. She's been with her partner for 25 years and had already planned to marry this week.

The High Court's vote was narrow at 5-4, but Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority opinion was clear: "The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry."

In West Hollywood Park, a massive rally was held to mark the occasion. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Horvath both attended.

At the Abbey, a restaurant bar that has become a meeting place after legal victories and setbacks, general manager Todd Barnes felt the excitement.

"It's amazing! I thought maybe it wouldn't be as big because California had gay marriage, but it's just as big," Barnes said.
