San Bernardino father, 6 kids surprised with Christmas toys

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- The holidays are right around the corner, and many families are struggling like never before. Spark of Love, local firefighters and other community partners are getting an early start with our holiday toy drive and gift giving. A family in need from San Bernardino had Christmas come a bit early.

"Society tells kids that if they're bad, if they misbehave, that Santa is not going to bring them anything for the holidays. But when a child that's experiencing poverty through no fault of their own doesn't get a toy, imagine what that does to their spirit," said Dr. Cid Pinedo, CEO of Children's Fund, a Spark of Love partner in San Bernardino County.

Cruz Muro lost a child to cancer and his wife in 2019, leaving him with six children to care for. This year has been especially difficult for the family from a financial standpoint. So Children's Fund and San Bernardino County Fire teamed up to give Spark of Love donated toys to his children.

"It kind of made me a little emotional just to see them happy," said Muro. "It's a blessing to see my kids joyful."

"We get to see the kids light up when we give them toys," said Jason McLaughlin, and engineer with the San Bernardino County Fire Department. "Most of the families that we provide toys to, without our help, wouldn't have anything for Christmas. So it's very rewarding for us to be able to give back to the community."
