Los Angeles Lakers' Anthony Davis readies for return as LeBron James deals with ankle sprain

The Los Angeles Lakers have listed LeBron James and Anthony Davis as doubtful for Tuesday night's road game against the Dallas Mavericks.

Davis went through a full live practice for the first time since suffering a right mid-foot sprain Feb. 16 against the Utah Jazz, coach Frank Vogel said Monday.

"We're at a point now where it's really about how he responds to that and the level of soreness he has coming out of his first live work," Vogel said of Davis.

James did not participate in practice, Vogel said. The Lakers star stayed back at the hotel to undergo treatment on the left ankle sprain he suffered in L.A.'s 116-108 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. James was dealing with swelling in the ankle on Monday, the coach said.

Vogel said the timing of Davis readying for a return just as James is dealing with another injury that could keep him out of the lineup fits with the "snakebitten" nature of the Lakers' season.

"It's been that type of year," Vogel said. "It's one of those things that's out of our control. It's unfortunate. But we have to lock in, and again like we've done all season, we have to shift our identity on the floor with regards to who's in and who's out."

L.A. is No. 10 in the Western Conference standings, holding a one-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs for the final play-in tournament spot with eight games left.

Without both James and Davis against the Philadelphia 76ers last week, the Lakers gave themselves a chance to win against MVP front-runner Joel Embiid before the Sixers edged them out 126-121.

"We fought like hell in that game. And we're going to fight like hell tomorrow night," Vogel said. "The competitive spirit was really high."
