Watch Kobe Bryant's 1st interview with ABC7's Rob Fukuzaki from 1996

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It was the summer of 1996 when ABC7 sports anchor Rob Fukuzaki first interviewed Kobe Bryant, who was 17 years old at the time.

The interview happened during a summer league game in Long Beach before Bryant even donned the purple and gold.

Bryant was selected by the Charlotte Hornets in the draft and was acquired by the Lakers in a trade that included center Vlade Divac.

"I'm very grateful. I'm very thankful that they have a lot of confidence in me and now it's time to go out there on the basketball court on a daily basis, or in the weight room, and improve my game, so I can prove them right," Bryant said in the interview.

The story also included an interview with Kobe's father Joe Bryant.

At the time, Kobe was playing under coach Del Harris, who also coached Joe Bryant.

"As parents we feel very comfortable with him because we have some experience with Del, and he's a good coach and a good person," Joe Bryant said. "We're happy. We feel very confident that Kobe is in good hands."
