ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig suffered an oblique strain during a violent swing in the fifth inning of Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels and could be out a while.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Puig is "almost certain" to land on the disabled list, but the team will know more when Puig undergoes an MRI in L.A. on Monday morning.

Puig, who hit a three-run homer in the second inning, appeared to tweak the area around his right rib cage in his first swing, on a 1-0 changeup. He then swung hard again, fouling off a sinker before doubling over in pain. After getting checked on by Roberts and Dodgers assistant athletic trainer Nathan Lucero, Puig begrudgingly gave way to Joc Pederson, who swung through an Andrew Heaney curveball and struck out.

"It's a violent swing," Roberts said, "and sometimes that oblique gives way."

Hitters typically need about a month to recover from oblique strains.

"I feel bad because I can't help my team win right now," said Puig, adding that he has had no prior history with injuries to his side. "I played a little bit better today, and I'm doing the best I can in the field to try to help my team win. Now this has happened. The only thing I can do right now is rest."

Puig's home run -- measuring 421 feet to straightaway center field, according to Statcast -- was his second in as many days and his 11th on the season, with all of them coming after May 13.

While Puig is out, Matt Kemp will get "the lion's share" of the playing time in right field, Roberts said. That would probably prompt Joc Pederson to make most of the starts in left field. Kemp has made 454 of his career 1,490 starts in right field, but the Dodgers would be sacrificing some defense with Puig out.

Despite losing the series to the Angels, the Dodgers are 32-16 since May 17 and sit only a game back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in the American League West.

"Of course that would be a big loss," Kemp, voted the National League's starting left fielder for the All-Star Game on Sunday, said of potentially losing Puig for an extended period of time. "But we have guys that can step it up and make things happen."
