SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A search for an armed suspect is underway in Sylmar Thursday night following a fatal shooting in the area.

The shooting happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. near San Fernando Road and Nurmi Street.

Authorities said a man, believed to be in his 30s, was shot at least once in the torso area. When paramedics arrived, they pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The suspect is described as a man between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 130 to 140 pounds and wearing a black baseball cap, gray hoodie and black pants. Police believe he may be armed with a handgun.

Police said they've received conflicting reports on whether the suspect fled on foot.

"What we do have is, unfortunately, there was a gentlemen that was shot to death, and we're looking at several different theories to try to solve this murder. We definitely need the public's help," said LAPD Lt. Mike Kozak.
