WALNUT, Calif. (KABC) -- The future has arrived at Mt. San Antonio College, where a self-driving shuttle is now giving students rides around campus.

The driverless shuttle has been on a trial run this week.

A small Silicon Valley startup called Varden Labs is testing the four-seat electric shuttle, taking students on a pre-programmed loop through campus.

While it's billed as driverless, which it is, the shuttle still needs a human to hold down a trigger on a joystick.

The company's goal is to eventually lease the automated shuttles to colleges, focusing on short campus trips, and leaving public roads and highways to the likes of Google.
