TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Planet Fitness gym remained closed Thursday after a car crashed into the building the afternoon before, leaving five people injured in Torrance.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Authorities said the elderly driver of a Lexus mistook the gas pedal for a brake and drove into the building. Five people at the gym were injured, with one of those people landing on the hood of the gym.

Four people were hospitalized, all with non-life-threatening injuries, and one person was treated at the scene. By Thursday, the car was removed from the building.

The gym tweeted that it would be closed until Friday or longer as the damage was assessed. Planet Fitness also issued a statement.

"Planet Fitness is actively working with the local authorities in response to this unfortunate accident," the statement said. "We are grateful to the first responders who provided immediate assistance, and our thoughts are with those who were injured. The club is temporarily closed and plans to reopen as soon as possible."
