HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KABC) -- Traffic around Los Angeles International Airport in Hawthorne will be more congested for the next several months starting Thursday morning due to a Caltrans repair project.

The ramp connecting the northbound 405 and the eastbound 105 freeways closed at 10 p.m. Wednesday and is expected to remain closed through winter 2017.

The connector ramp from the northbound 405 to the westbound 105 will also be closed nightly through Friday from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Caltrans crews will conduct roadway and embankment repairs. Crews will excavate pavement to place material that will further help stabilize the slope, install a new drainage system and repave the roadway with concrete slabs to enhance safety and create a smoother drive for motorists.

Caltrans officials said the long-term connector closure is necessary to provide a safe work zone for construction crews and motorists.

Drivers who need to connect between the freeways should get off of the northbound 405 at Imperial Highway and head east to enter the eastbound 105 Freeway at Freeman Avenue.
