EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Heads up for Southern Californians heading through East Los Angeles this weekend as both sides of the 710 Freeway will be shut down for an emergency project by the California Department of Transportation.

The northbound side of the 710 Freeway from the 60 Freeway to Olympic Boulevard will be closed from midnight Saturday night until 6 a.m. Sunday. Southbound lanes will be closed from 11p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m.

The shutdown will help crews repair some pavement damage on the freeway bridge above Olympic Boulevard.

Motorists should expect long delays and consider alternate routes.

Stage two of the closures is expected Oct. 28 to Oct. 30.
