Grass fire shuts southbound 5 Freeway lanes in Commerce

An overnight grass fire partially shut down the 5 Freeway in Commerce, snarling early morning traffic in the area.

The fire was reported near Slauson Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

ABC7 viewer Sarah Palomino shared this photo of smoke from a grass fire that ignited near the 5 Freeway in Commerce on Monday, July 6, 2015.


The blaze was knocked down, but it prompted a closure of all southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway. Traffic was at a crawl through the area. Lanes began reopening around 6:30 a.m.


Several northbound lanes were closed but have since reopened.

It was not clear when the lanes would be reopened.
