MEBANE, N.C. -- Over 130 vehicles were involved in a series of accidents on Interstate 40 in central North Carolina Sunday, sending 25 people to local hospitals.

According to the Alamance Fire Department, the first accident happened around 5:45 p.m. in Graham. There was a total of nine accidents, seven going west and two going east on the interstate from exits 147 and 153 in Alamance County.

Authorities said all of the injuries were minor, and there were no fatalities.

The cause of the accidents were under investigation. There were severe storms moving through the area at the time, but police said some of the wrecks were caused as people slowed to take pictures of the scene.

The interstate finally reopened shortly before 11 p.m.
