Hurricane Irma: Storm affects itineraries of some travelers at LAX

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- As Hurricane Irma continued to make its way toward South Florida on Wednesday, the number of airline flight cancellations was likely to rise - a development that was affecting some travelers at Los Angeles International Airport.

Several passengers at LAX said they were changing their plans due to the Category 5 storm.

"I know it's going to hit hard and everyone is getting prepared," said Vanessa Zoghbi. "My family is down there, so we just want to be ready for it."

Anyone heading to the Caribbean or Florida could be impacted by the massive storm. Puerto Rico's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport remained closed Wednesday, with more airport closures expected.

"I actually hope that the velocity goes down, but it seems that but it seems that it just keeps going up," Zoghbi said of the hurricane.

Travelers like Mike Beer were also having their scheduled cruise ship itineraries affected.

"We just got off a 20-hour flight from Australia," Beer said at LAX. "So we're not really sure what's happening yet, but we don't think we'll be going to Miami and we don't think we'll be going to the Bahamas either."

With that part of their trip in doubt, Beer said he and his wife were considering other options.

"We've got a couple of days in Las Vegas, and we thought we'd go and find out what the story is. You can get stuck in worse places I suppose," he said with a chuckle.
