Need a ride New Year's Eve? Check out your options
Need a ride on New Year's Eve? With the surge in ride-sharing apps, there are plenty of ways to get around - but tonight, you may end up paying a lot more than usual.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Need a ride on New Year's Eve? With the surge in ride-sharing apps, there are plenty of ways to get around.

Once the celebrations are done, it'll be time for millions of party-goers to head home. Their options include the trendy travel apps Lyft and Uber.

"Definitely going to be Uber to get around. It's the way to go now. It's cheap, it's quick, it's convenient," said Jen Nguyen, an Uber user.

That may be true, but during peak travel times, Lyft and Uber fares go up like fireworks.

Uber even released a statement warning Los Angeles-area customers the price for a ride at 2 a.m. will surge over $100.

Lyft calls its peak period "Prime Time."

"Prime Time exists basically as an incentive to get people out on the road. I mean, when people know there's going to be higher percentage of Prime Time, they'll be like, 'All right I might as well drive these few hours,'" said a Lyft driver.

Bakersfield resident Sandy Nunez said she'd rather catch a ride in a yellow car then a black and white one.

"Oh yeah, definitely going to be drinking. I'm going to buy some liquor and start drinking now," Nunez said.

A cabbie could be a cheaper way to get home. Especially if you use the Flywheel app. It allows you to order a taxicab, and for tonight only, all rides are $10 no matter where you are going.

Flywheel is offering the special to incite people to use the app rather than find a cab on the street.

If $10 is still a little steep, try Metro. From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., buses, subways and Metro rail will cost you absolutely nothing.

"Free rides tonight. Nobody can match that," said Marc Littman with Metro.
