Police shoot, kill burglar and stabbing suspect in Van Nuys

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect involved in a burglary and stabbing died after being shot by police in Van Nuys Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers responded to a reported burglary at an apartment in the 6900 block of Kester Avenue at about 1 p.m.

Police said the suspect stabbed a 50-year-old man several times, bit two people and attacked another person with an unknown object described by witnesses as a propane tank.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News the suspect ran from the apartment complex and jumped on top of a motorhome that was parked in front of the building. Neighbors said the suspect broke into the motorhome and jumped inside in an effort to hide from police.

Officials said the suspect was confronted by officers inside the motorhome. Authorities said the suspect tried to attack an officer and was shot by police.

The suspect later died at the hospital. The stabbing victim underwent surgery. He was listed in stable condition. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Police said they are trying to determine if there was a relationship between the suspect and victims, but confirmed the suspect did not live in the apartment.

Officials said their investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing.
