LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tuesday was the last day of the 2014 water year and it's been one of the driest on record, according to the state Department of Water Resources.

The water year is measured from Oct. 1 of any given year through Sept. 30 of the following year. The report says the state received less than 60 percent of the average precipitation during 2014.

California's dams and reservoirs held only 57 percent of their average water storage. Officials say there is the possibility of another dry winter next year, which would be the fourth in a row.

Earlier this year, Gov. Jerry Brown declared a statewide drought emergency and called on residents to reduce water usage.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
