REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The body of missing 21-year-old swimmer Marlon Fajardo was recovered in the waters near the Redondo Beach Pier Saturday.

Fajardo was swimming with several friends when he was swept away by waves near the Knob Hill Lifeguard Tower around 3:45 a.m.

A multi-agency search effort involving Redondo Beach firefighters, Los Angeles County lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard ensued. A Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter was also recruited.

The missing inexperienced swimmer was described as a black male wearing maroon swimming shorts, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department. Fajardo's body was recovered before 11 a.m.

"We usually don't recommend swimming in the dark," Lifeguard Capt. Christine Linkletter said.

A high surf advisory remains in effect until Monday due to Hurricane Norbert. The storm swirling off the coast of Baja, Mexico pushed a storm swell northward toward the California coastline Friday.

South-facing beaches in Southern California were expected to receive the largest surf, up to about 7 to 10 feet, through the weekend. Rip currents and minor coastal flooding are also expected. Residents in threatened areas, including Long Beach, were building up sand berms and filing up sand bags.
