Mountain High temporarily closes until new snow falls

WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood has shut down the slopes until new snow accumulates.

Officials at the resort said warm temperatures and a dry forecast prompted the closure. But customers should hold on to their tickets because some forecasts predict snowfall by March 11, officials said.

In a press release, the resort said opensnow.com predicts late season storms caused by El Nino should bring more snow.

The season started with high hopes. Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 3, the resort reported a 15 percent increase in visits, but attendance has since dwindled due to the lack of fresh powder.

Many residents hope for more snow to reopen the resort and bring back business.

Nights at the resorts have been 45 degrees or more, which is too warm to make new snow.

Mountain High is located only 90 minutes from Los Angeles and Orange counties. It typically operates from mid-November through mid-April. For more information, customers can visit www.mthigh.com or call (888) 754-7878 ext. 2 Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
