ECHO PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- All lanes of the southbound 101 Freeway in the Echo Park area were shut down for hours Tuesday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed.

The crash was reported around 3:45 a.m. at Alvarado Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian was hit by a semi-truck, but it's unclear what that person was doing on the freeway.

The closure created a traffic mess for early morning commuters, who were being diverted at Vermont Avenue, as authorities worked to clear lanes.

At 7:45 a.m., the CHP tweeted that all lanes would remain shut down for an additional 30 minutes.
