Firefighters responded to the scene and transported two people in unknown condition, the fire department said.
Footage from the scene showed a heavily damaged car pressed along a center divider after it crashed. The car's windshield was shattered and the front end was smashed. At least one bullet hole was visible on the car.
LAPD later confirmed there was a car-to-car shooting, but further details were not released. A suspect is still sought, and the California Highway Patrol asks anyone with information to come forward.
Investigators believe the suspect kept driving after shooting at the victims.
CHP shut down lanes in the area, and traffic was being diverted on Wilmington Avenue.
The closures was initially expected to last for about two hours, but traffic was still backed up all the way to the 710 Freeway as lanes remained shut down late Friday.
