405 Freeway: All lanes reopened in Torrance after fatal multi-car crash involving pedestrian

TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A deadly multi-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Wednesday morning prompted the hourslong closure of four southbound lanes on the 405 Freeway in Torrance, officials said, nearly bringing traffic to a standstill during the early part of the morning commute.

The crash was reported shortly after 4:30 a.m. near Vermont Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It was not immediately clear if the deceased person was an occupant of a vehicle or the pedestrian.

The southbound HOV lane and all northbound lanes remained open throughout the morning, but traffic slowed to a crawl as crews worked to clear the scene.

Just after 8:30 a.m., Caltrans announced that all lanes were reopened.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
