LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- More than 1 million immigrants in the country illegally have obtained a California driver's license since the state began issuing them three years ago, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The law requires the DMV to issue driver's licenses if applicants can prove their identity and California residency.

Supporters of the law say it makes roadways safer by requiring a driving test. Critics say the law legitimizes illegal immigration.
