Las Vegas victim Carrie Barnette mourned as 'beautiful inside and out'

LAS VEGAS (KABC) -- Jenn Gibson says in the days since Sunday's shooting massacre targeting concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas, she's felt guilty for being alive.

Her childhood friend, Carrie Barnette, was among the 58 people killed.

The two were standing side-by-side when they heard the pops of gunfire.

"I don't know how it missed me because we were literally touching arms," said Gibson.

Barnette, 34, of Riverside, had just passed her 10-year anniversary with Disney, working most recently at Flo's V-8 Cafe in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.

"We're in touch with her family, offering our heartfelt condolences as well as any support they may need in this incredibly difficult time," said Disney CEO Bob Iger on Monday.

Gibson says several strangers helped carry her friend to a sheltered location. After a Good Samaritan performed CPR, she says an EMT pronounced Barnette dead, just minutes after being struck by the gunfire.

"I pulled out her drivers license, we put it in her pocket so she wouldn't be listed as a Jane Doe... and we left and we started running," Gibson recalled. "And we didn't even know where we were running to."

Gibson, who was grazed by a bullet, spent several hours hiding in a bathroom at the Tropicana Hotel before making it home to her own family.

"As I replay that night in my head what consumes me the most is the feeling of being helpless," Gibson wrote on Facebook. She believes the 22,000 people who attended Route 91 will forever be bonded because of the tragedy.

Gibson, who moved from Southern California to Las Vegas 6 years ago, says she has never seen a community come together the way Las Vegas has come together this past week.

The 36-year-old mother says she will remember her friend as somebody who would do anything to help others. "She was just beautiful inside and out. Anyone that knew her, loved her."
