The incident developed shortly after 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Alondra Boulevard and Aprilia Avenue, a spokesperson for the Highway Patrol said.
After being pulled over, two CHP officers exited their patrol vehicle and the driver in a Kia Optima accelerated toward them, the spokesperson said, adding that one of the officers fell onto his back.
Both officers then opened fire, according to the Highway Patrol. The suspect and the officers reentered their vehicles and a brief chase ensued. After the officers lost sight of him, the driver abandoned the car and fled on foot. The vehicle was later found near the intersection of Aprilia Avenue and Cypress Street.
Apparent bullet holes were seen in the windshield of the Kia. Whether he was struck by the officers' gunfire was unknown, but blood was found inside the car, authorities said.
