The shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. in the 2100 block of North Long Beach Boulevard, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's officials.

The unidentified suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Sheriff's officials said it all began when a deputy noticed a 2018 van parked in the northwest corner of East Pine Street and Long Beach Boulevard. The deputy ran the license plate and a return of a stolen vehicle was received.
Once back up deputies arrived they attempted to detain the man inside before he pulled out a 2 to 3-inch fixed blade knife. Sheriff's officials said a deputy fired and the suspect sustained two gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

The knife was recovered at the scene.
No deputies were injured in the incident, LASD officials said.
