The incident happened around 12:15 p.m.
A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy pulled a suspect over for a traffic stop and then asked the suspect to exit the vehicle. The deputy was walking the suspect back to the patrol car when the suspect broke free and ran away up a hillside.
The suspect then ran back to his own vehicle with the deputy chasing him on foot. The suspect ended up driving off with the deputy being dragged by the car. At some point, the deputy opened fire, striking the suspect who was later declared dead at the scene.
The deputy had injuries to his legs. A handgun was recovered in the suspect's vehicle, the sheriff's department says.
