LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Gas prices have been rising in California and across the nation in the wake of two powerful hurricanes hitting southern states.
Gas is now averaging about $3.15 a gallon in California and $3.19 in the Los Angeles/Long Beach area, according to the Auto Club.

"Both of those averages are up 5 cents from one week ago," said Doug Shupe with the Auto Club. "And it's very possible that we will see increased prices as we move into the days following Irma's landfall."
The national average is $2.67 a gallon.

The increase is driven by the closure of Gulf coast refineries after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in addition to increased demand after Hurricane Irma.
The Auto Club recommends motorists shop around to find the best prices.
