SpaceX readies for next SoCal launch

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Following the success of its Falcon Heavy launch, SpaceX is gearing up for its next mission: sending satellites into orbit, so they can beam down Internet access to Earth.

The next SpaceX launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base could be as early as Saturday, according to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission.

If this one is anything like the company's last launch, it could be quite a spectacle.

SpaceX launched a satellite-bearing rocket from the Southern California base in December that streaked across the night sky with an unusual formation of lights, alarming many residents in the area.

This time, the Hawthorne-based company wants to launch two demonstration satellites, part of its proposed network of small satellites to provide Internet access, particularly in rural areas.

Last week, SpaceX launched its Falcon Heavy rocket with a Tesla car aboard into space.
