LA PUENTE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was taken into custody early Friday morning after officials say he shot at deputies in the East Valinda-La Puente area.

Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives responded to a disturbance call at the Covina Hills mobile home park in the 17300 block of Temple Avenue at about 2:30 a.m.

When deputies arrived and knocked on the suspect's door, he did not open it, officials said. Instead, the man fired five or six shots through the door.

Deputies returned fire before eventually getting into the home from the back side.

The suspect was not struck and deputies were also not injured in the shootout, sheriff's officials said.

The suspect, who sheriff's officials described as an elderly man, was taken into custody. His identity was not released.

Sheriff's officials said he will undergo a medical evaluation and will likely be charged with attempted murder on a peace officer.

The suspect appeared to have used a handgun to shoot at deputies, and investigators said they found other weapons such as shotguns and assault rifles in the trailer.
