The incident was reported around 5:40 p.m. at a parking lot behind a clothing store and a liquor store at Studebaker Road and Rosecrans Avenue. Deputies responded after receiving a call of a robbery in progress, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Video posted to the Citizen app showed an active scene near the intersection with a portion of a parking lot blocked off.
Investigators say when deputies tried to detain the suspect, he pulled out a shotgun and that's when four deputies opened fire.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Authorities say he had entered a business in the area and pointed a the weapon at employees before stealing money and merchandise.
A witness said there were about 100 people gathered at a nearby bakery participating in a worship service when they heard gunshots.
"While we were in our bible study, you know, listening to the word, we suddenly hear the helicopter, a light just kind of flashing all around the parking lot, and we also heard gunshots. It was very intense," said Cristina Lopez.

Andrew Edwards, another witness, said his friend went to check on his car after noticing the heavy police presence.
"He seen all the cop cars and he wanted to check on his vehicle, so when he did, the helicopter sounded off to him, telling him that, you know, you need to get out of the way, you're in danger," said Edwards. "But he said that he seen all the cops with their weapons drawn and the suspect there."
The incident remains under investigation.
