San Bernardino police said the ATF was conducting a traffic stop on a silver Mercedes when the driver sped up in the direction of two officers. They fired on the vehicle, striking the driver. The driver was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.
The incident also happened in front of a senior citizens complex. Older witnesses said they heard the gunshots and car crash.
Two occupants of the car, who were not injured, were arrested at the scene.
San Bernardino police are investigating the incident. They said at least two ATF agents were involved in the shooting.
The incident happened around 7:08 p.m. in the parking lot of the Carousel Mall in the 600 block of West 4th Street. The mall was shut down.
