Officers responded to the 12000 block of Desmond Street around 3 a.m. after after receiving an assault with a deadly weapon call, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police say the family members had barricaded themselves in a bedroom and told authorities the man was under the influence of narcotics.
The family was safely evacuated from the home but the suspect refused to come out.
Eventually, the man exited the house through a window while armed with a knife, according to police. Officers deployed beans bags but they were unsuccessful in stopping him.
Police say that's when the man charged at officers, prompting them to open fire. The suspect was struck and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The family members were being interviewed by detectives.
