PALMDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- Homicide investigators are looking into the death of a toddler in Palmdale.

Deputies responded to a rescue call just after 5 p.m. Tuesday at a house on East Avenue P-15, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

When they arrived, they found 2-year-old Angel Flores not breathing.

The L.A. County Fire Department also responded and performed life-saving measures on the toddler, who was then rushed to the hospital where he died.

"I can't believe what happened," the child's grandmother Culma Flores said.

Flores says she learned what happened when she visited her daughter. She says her daughter fell asleep with the toddler in the bed with her and when she woke up the worst had happened.

"When she wake up the baby was already dead. The baby was dead. It was like purple," Flores said.

Investigators are not speculating on a cause of death.

Maria Martha Naranjo is among many in the community who are grieving the loss.

Naranjo says the child who died was her next door neighbor.

She told Eyewitness News she would play with him since her car was parked next to his fence. Naranjo added she was in shock when she learned what happened.

Neighbors say the boy and his family moved into the house about a year ago, but they mostly kept to themselves. They said the boy was sweet, but added they could always hear yelling from inside his house.

"But I have to say something - he used to cry too much... I could hear all the noises," Naranjo said.

The sheriff's department is working to get a search warrant for the home.

"We're not going to rule anything out. We do know that there was a child death and we're going to look at every angle," said Lt. Art Spencer.
So far, no one has been arrested or detained.

Meanwhile, the coroner will determine the child's cause of death.
