PLANO, Texas -- Eight people, including the suspect, are dead after a shooting at a home in Plano, Texas, according to local authorities.

Police were called to the home for reports of shots fired shortly after 8 p.m. A responding officer confronted the suspect upon arrival, shooting and killing him, Plano police spokesman David Tilley said.

Nine other victims with gunshot wounds were found in the home. Seven of them were dead, and two others were transported to the hospital. The conditions of the two surviving victims are not known.

The victims and suspect have not yet been identified. All of those killed and injured are believed to be adults.

An eyewitness told local media that she heard as many as 40 gunshots coming from the home.

Tilley said that a shooting of this magnitude was unusual for Plano - located about 20 miles north of Dallas - especially in such a quiet neighborhood. He could not say whether police had been called to the home before Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
