101 Freeway shut down in downtown Los Angeles

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Authorities shut down both sides of the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, snarling traffic during the afternoon rush hour Tuesday.

The California Highway Patrol closed lanes near Temple Street because of police activity, officials said.

Around 6 p.m., AIR7 showed traffic at a standstill in the area as drivers faced significant delays. Traffic was backed up for miles.

It was not immediately clear when the freeway lanes would reopen.
