LA and Orange Co. to host empowering Autism Speaks walks in November

Monday, September 8, 2025
For families touched by autism, each day can be a challenge.

In November, the Autism Speaks Empower Walk and 5K Run will raise awareness and funds that improve quality of life for so many across Southern California.

"It's a lifelong journey and it can be very daunting," attorney Georgianna Junco-Kelman said. "Families are impacted in different ways, and each one is different."

Data shows one in every 31 children will receive a diagnosis of autism in the U.S.

Fortunately, Autism Speaks is there and ready to help, one step at a time.

"It's important for families to know that they are not alone," Autism Speaks director Natasha Martin said.

The 20-year-old organization provides extensive support for Southern California families through the entire lifespan, Junco-Kelman said.

In addition to offering its Autism Response Team to provide information and referral support, Autism Speaks also offers a variety of resource guides touching every part of our lives.

This year's walks are designed to help not just bring awareness and fund research, but to leave participants feeling empowered by the event.

"It's about building community, it's about support, it's about hope," Junco-Kelman said.

In addition to its signature walk, Autism Speaks will stand up a brand-new 5K, supporting the organization's mission to create a more inclusive world for all people with autism.

The events will also include a "superhero sprint," a fast-paced race for all ages - with capes included.

"Whether you choose to walk or run, participate as an individual or part of a team, the Empower Walk and 5K Run is really for everyone who wants to make a difference in the autism community," Martin said.

Participants can also take advantage of a resource fair at both events, featuring a lineup of tools and services, in addition to other inclusive activities.

The Orange County walk will happen Saturday, Nov. 1 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado. The address is 5305 Santiago Cyn Rd.

The Los Angeles walk will happen Sunday, Nov. 23 at UCLA Wilson Plaza, located at 221 Westwood Plaza.
