In this latest instance, a 53-year-old man suffered a medical emergency, Sierra Madre Police Department Sgt. J. Rodriguez told City News Service.
Police received a call about 10 a.m. Saturday about a hiker experiencing a medical emergency, Rodriguez said. Police closed the 6-mile trail between Sierra Madre and the mountain's peak.
Officers and Sierra Madre Fire Department firefighters found the hiker and tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.
Friends of the hiker and passersby were performing CPR on the man when rescuers arrived, according to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team.
"Sierra Madre Search and Rescue extends our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man," the team said. "We also extend our thanks to the man's friends and other hikers who assisted today."
There was no evidence of foul play, Rodriguez said. The death remained under police investigation and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office will determine the man's cause of death.
The trail was reopened at 2:04 p.m.
Last Saturday, the trail was closed after a hiker fell down a fixed rope section of the trail and died from cardiac arrest, officials said.
