The incident happened near a housing complex in the area of Carl Street and Lehigh Avenue just before 9 p.m.
Police were called to the area on a report of a man with a gun.
Officers from the department's Foothill Division Gang Enforcement Detail attempted a traffic stop on a black BMW, the LAPD says. That's when police say the front passenger, a 20-year-old man armed with a gun, got out of the car and ran away.

A foot chase ensued and at some point, police opened fire.
The individual was shot by police and transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
LAPD says the suspect was later pronounced dead.
An investigation is ongoing as police cordoned off the scene.
Police say the suspect's handgun was recovered. No officers were injured.
