In Azusa, the celebration has already started at a tribute corner with a beautiful new mural and iconic monument. City manager Sergio Gonzalez they jumped at the chance to be the first city in California to get one.
We want to make sure that people come through Azusa, see this beautiful mural, pay homage to the mother road, and also stay in Azusa shop and eat and contribute," said Gonzalez.
It's at the corner of Foothill and Alameda and features several local landmarks that bring back a lot of memories for Mayor Eddie Alvarez.
"We have a long history, you know, Foothill here in Azusa has been so popular. You can see it's the main thoroughfare," said Alvarez.
Historian and City Clerk Jeffrey Cornejo loves Azusa's tie to the Mother Road, forever part of pop culture, like in a song by the Andrews Sisters. While city leaders take pride in the new installation, Louie and Lavonne Gomez from Bottomss Car Club can't wait for it to add to their annual car show, "Cruising Back 2 Route 66."
"Pride just for our city. It's something that will be looked upon and just, you know, everybody loves it. It's going to be a good centerpiece to talk about," said Lavonne Gomez.
