UNIVERSITY PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the death of a newborn baby girl whose body was found near the University of Southern California campus.

Officers responded Monday to the Cardinal Gardens Apartments in the 3100 block of McClintock Avenue. The LAPD told ABC News that a "full-term infant" was found dead at the USC student housing apartment complex.

Initially, a 20-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for trouble breathing just before 6 p.m. About an hour later, the fire department says the LAPD asked them to return after an infant was found unresponsive.

"They went straight to the bedroom, so I'm assuming they already knew something that happened," USC student Hugo Mayorquin said.

Los Angeles police say it is investigating, and the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner lists the baby as 19 hours old. An exam on the body by the medical examiner is still pending.

Eyewitness News was told the department's Juvenile Division is investigating.
