WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) -- It was almost two months ago at about 11:30 p.m. when 27-year-old Benjamin Castaneda walked out of his home in Whittier for the last time. Now, sheriff deputies are hoping a $20,000 reward and new video evidence will bring them closer to finding justice for Castaneda's family.

Newly released surveillance video shows the vehicle that sheriff's detectives believe was involved in the shooting of Castaneda. The video shows it fleeing the scene on Monday, June 2, when Castaneda was gunned down.

The shooting happened on Broadway Avenue near Norwalk Boulevard in Whittier.

"We believe there are people who were out that evening and may have saw something or witnessed the shooting," said Lt. Steve De Jong of the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau. "We believe someone knows what happened to Benjamin on June 2."

Detectives say Castaneda drove his 2004 silver Acura out of the southern exit of his complex, made a left turn, heading towards Washington, before the suspect's vehicle, a champagne or silver colored sedan, pulled alongside his car. According to a witness, both vehicles came to a stop. Detectives say words were exchanged, followed by someone in the suspect's vehicle firing a shot, striking Castaneda in the upper torso.

"Benjamin drove his vehicle to the north entrance of this apartment complex," said De Jong. "He was unable to control his vehicle. Due to being shot, he collided with the curb, then a large boulder in the grass area near the entrance gate."

Detectives and his family say Castaneda was a model citizen. He was a Navy veteran, he worked two jobs, and was never in trouble with the law. They say he loved the Lakers, the Dodgers, and spending time with his family.

"He leaves behind so many people," said Annel, Castaneda's mother. "So if you have any information, please come forward and don't let my son be a statistic."

"A hard-working young man gone too soon," said Violeta, Castaneda's aunt. "And we're just hoping that someone is able to provide some information."

Investigators say there is no known motive as of right now, but they are doing whatever they can to find justice for Castaneda.
