SHERMAN OAKS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Surveillance video captured a brazen jewelry store burglary in Sherman Oaks, where thieves smashed their way into a business on Ventura Boulevard, adding to a growing list of break-ins across the San Fernando Valley.

The video shows suspects breaking into a business next door to the Neda Jewelry Store, then tearing through a connecting wall inside a bathroom to reach the jewelry shop.

A large hole was left behind, and footage shows the burglars sliding their way into the store before smashing items inside.

Police said the thieves were unable to steal the owner's jewelry, which was locked in a safe, but they fled with some of the owner's property, leaving extensive damage behind.

Eyewitness News spoke to the business owner off camera, who said he was emotional and upset. His business was burglarized just a few years ago, and he nearly lost everything.

Nearby business owners say the crime hits close to home.

"I hurt for that guy. He's a good man," said Matt Hoch, the owner of Sonny's Handcrafted Ice Cream and Shaved Ice, located just a few doors down.

Hoch said his own business has been burglarized three times in the past 10 years.

"Ours was pretty brazen. A rock being thrown through the door. They get in. They look for something to steal," he said.

The Sherman Oaks burglary is part of a broader pattern of crime in the Valley.

Burglars target 2 Valley Village homes within minutes, raising concerns of coordinated break-ins

In North Hollywood, thieves recently hit Cara Vana Coffee Shop for the third time in five months. In Granada Hills, neighbors have reported a rash of break-ins over the past several weeks, and several homes in Valley Village were targeted this week.

"After they were taking the report about my home invasion, they got another call of another home invasion within a mile away. It's pretty scary," said Nina, whose Studio City home was hit in January.

People living and working in the San Fernando Valley say more must be done to curb the surge in break-ins.

In response, Mayor Karen Bass has ordered Los Angeles police to step up air and ground patrols along the busy Ventura Boulevard business and residential corridor in an effort to make officers more visible in areas prone to burglaries, like the strip mall where Hoch runs his ice cream shop.

"I haven't seen any extra patrols in our area here or at home, so I'll be looking to see if there is actually a follow-up to the promise, and we'll see what happens," he said. "I want peace of mind... and I've had it. These stories are starting to invade my serenity."

An Eyewitness News crew watched as officers patrolled the Neda Jewelry Store parking lot on Saturday night. They also plan to use license plate readers and collaborate with other departments for help.
