LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A prolonged police chase through the San Fernando Valley came to a dramatic end on Friday morning when a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into an CHP cruiser on the 405 Freeway.

The pursuit was ongoing shortly after 10:30 a.m. as the driver of a black 2025 Honda Accord made their way along surface streets after exiting the 101 Freeway. At least four Los Angeles Police Department cruisers were following close behind.

Whether any passengers were in the car was unclear.

Shortly before 11 a.m. the driver entered the 405 Freeway in Encino and headed northbound through North Hills amid light traffic.

The car exited the freeway in Mission Hills, drove under the freeway and then used an exit ramp to reenter the freeway. The driver made a U-turn on the freeway and headed south on the 405.

Moments later, the sedan again got off the freeway in North Hills and stopped briefly at a gas station, at the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Aqueduct Avenue. The chase continued after an LAPD patrol vehicle pulled into the gas station.

In a bizarre twist, a person on a motorcycle at one point engaged the fleeing vehicle, driving alongside it as the helmeted rider gestured toward the suspect. Around 11:15, the sedan stopped at an intersection and the motorcycle rider approached it, attempting to open the front passenger-side door before the suspect behind the wheel drove away.

The pursuit then proceeded into a parking structure on the campus of Cal State Northridge. Officers chased the car through the structure and out onto surface streets.

Shortly before 11:30, the fleeing sedan was T-boned by an innocent driver at an intersection in Granada Hills.

The suspect drove away from the crash site, and minutes later, at least one of the Honda's tires blew out after possibly driving over a spike strip. But the chase continued on surface streets, with the driver refusing to pull over.

The saga finally came to an end less than 10 minutes later, when the Honda crashed head-on into a California Highway Patrol SUV on the 405 Freeway. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly tackled by several officers.

Details about the alleged burglary were not immediately available.
