You can learn stunt acting at Cal State LA but the class is on the verge of being cut

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Actors looking for their big break may be better able to punch their own ticket to Hollywood fame by learning how to take a literal punch.

That is the message from Jack Huang who has spent the last 20 years teaching stunt acting at Cal State Los Angeles.

Huang says learn how to fall, fight, kick or get kicked and you will definitely be a more attractive hire on a Hollywood set.

"Anyone interested in being involved in film business, they could start with extra work, but this is one of the easiest way for them to get their SAG voucher," said Huang.

His students agree, including Janaè Jackson, who has already found work on productions because she picked up various stunt skills in the class.

"If you can act, if you can stunt, if you can do your own thing and don't need a body double, it makes you ten times more valuable," Jackson said.

The Cal State L.A. class doesn't come with an especially sexy title - It's called Special Activities in Physical Education (Stunts) - but the lessons in fake fighting and falling do provide a good workout in addition to the career skills.

But the class right now is hanging in the balance. Huang says budget cuts have left the university considering cutting the course, and now a new dearth of interested students is adding to the threat.

"I handled more than 150 students per semester but the enrollment suddenly declined," he told Eyewitness News. "We only need eight more students."

Without those new enrollments, Huang says the class will be cancelled. Fortunately, it's an open enrollment class so anyone can sign up for it.
