Changes to CalFresh eligibility take effect. Here's what you need to know

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Changes to CalFresh eligibility affecting certain non-citizens took effect this week, potentially impacting thousands of recipients.

The Department of Public Social Services said the changes stem from federal policy updates outlined in H.R. 1 and will make some non-citizens ineligible for food assistance benefits.

Those affected include certain asylees, refugees, parolees, individuals with deportation or removal withheld, conditional entrants and victims of trafficking, according to the department.

"Applicants within these categories may still qualify for CalFresh if their immigration status changes to Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) and they meet all other program eligibility requirements," according to a department statement. "Non-citizens currently receiving CalFresh benefits will continue to receive assistance until their renewal period, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria at that time."

County officials encouraged recipients to update their contact information, monitor renewal deadlines and check their mail for notices regarding their benefits.

Additional changes tied to the federal law are expected to take effect June 1, including expanded work requirements for certain adults without dependents and reduced exemptions for some groups.

More information is available through the county Department of Public Social Services website.
