The chase began around 11 a.m. on Saturday when officers tried to stop a driver in a red Honda Civic. According to the department, the driver, Matthew Rodriguez, is a known gang member and convicted felon.
"[Rodriguez] failed to yield, and a 50-minute vehicle pursuit ensued," said police in a press release about the incident.
Police said during the chase, Rodriguez was driving erratically, attempted to hit police cars and made shooting gestures at officers.
"During the pursuit, Rodriguez presented an extreme danger to the public and officers," police said. "Rodriguez ran multiple red traffic signals, operated his vehicle in opposing traffic lanes, and traveled at a high rate of speed through residential areas."
The chase ended when Rodriguez crashed into a parked car.
Police said he actively resisted arrest and slammed his car into a police cruiser.
"Officers deployed their TASER, which was ineffective causing officers to use alternative force options including, the use of a baton, punches, and knee strikes," police said.
The department said it's investigating the incident.
"An internal investigation has been initiated to ensure all personnel involved complied with state law and department policy," police said. "Consistent with department policy, this use of force incident will also be subject to a use of force review. The Colton Police Department remains committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining the trust of our community."
Rodriguez faces multiple felony charges.
Meantime, anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the Colton Police Department at 909-370-5000.
